Description
Elevated body temperature is also known as hyperthermia, pyrexia, or fever. This elevated body temperature can assist the body in fighting infection in the short term. However, a severe fever is a sign of a serious medical condition that requires immediate treatment.
A fever may be uncomfortable, but it usually isn’t a cause for concern unless it reaches 103 F (39.4 C). But for infants and toddlers, a slightly elevated temperature may indicate a serious infection.
Fever usually occurs when a part of the brain, the hypothalamus, raises the body’s normal temperature. Further, fever can result from food poisoning, a bacterial infection, flu or pneumonia, viral infections or medication side effects, or during teething for infants.
